An employment handbook can often be binding on both the employee and the employer depending on the circumstances in which the document was given to the employee. The contents or language used within the handbook, and the method and manner in which the employer applied the standards set out in the handbook.
Many times when I counsel people about an employment termination, I want to see their handbook to see what promises have been made to them regarding severance, termination issues, standards of performance so I can determine whether the termination was properly done.
